Read this if you’re interested in being a tutor!

We are holding an informal information session today (Sunday, Oct 2) from 12-1 if you want to stop by and get to know the group or ask us any questions you might have.

Additionally there is a mandatory tutor training session for new tutors this Monday or Tuesday from 7-9pm at El Centro Chicano. You can come either day. If you absolutely cannot make it please let us know and we will try to work something out so that you can start tutoring as soon as possible.

Finally we have a small survey that we would like all interested tutors to fill out. Please fill this out because it will help us create appropriate tutor pairs.

Get ready for a new year of Habla!!

Hey there returning and prospective Habla tutors! We’re super excited for Habla this year and are looking forward to all of the learning and community we’ll be having together, between Stanford students and Stanford workers and all of our community partners–because that’s what this group is all about. We hope you’re equally (or more?!) excited to get to really know your tutee, share your stories, and learn from their stories as you take a little time out of your schedules to help them improve their English.

If you’ve already signed up to express your interest (probably at the Haas Public Service Open House or the upcoming Activities Fair on Friday), then expect a short form/survey in your inbox by this weekend to fill out your basic contact info and available days to teach (Día or Noche). There will also be a link on this site once that’s sent out.

In the meantime, if this will be your first quarter tutoring with us, make sure you can attend one of the MANDATORY training sessions for new tutors either this Monday, Oct 3 or Tuesday, Oct 4 from 7-9pm at El Centro. Returning tutors are also encouraged to attend because we’ll be doing some things differently this year and there will be some useful info/demonstrations on what the sessions will look like, resources we’ll put out regularly this year so you can get familiar with the lessons before the actual class, adjusting for more or less advanced tutees, how to best guide your tutee while minimizing the amount of Spanish you need to use when they need extra explanation, and so on.

That’s all for now. If you have any questions, use the contact form on this site. Get excited!!

GRADUATION!!

Hey Everyone!

I just wanted to remind you all that we have Habla Graduation tonight.  It will be our last Habla session for the year and even if you haven’t been able to make it to Habla lately, for whatever reason, we would love it if you came to the Graduation tonight!!  It will be at the normal 10pm time and there will be lots of food and a nice ceremony to give all the workers their graduation certificates!  I hope you all can make it!!! :)
Habla Love,

Habla Core positions

Hi everyone,

Habla is recruiting new members for the core team. Habla core coordinates logistics of the Habla meetings, lesson plans with the teacher, and general plans with our partner, Building Skills Partnership. It has been a great experience for me so far, since the core team is really cool. We have positions available as noche, dia, or row coordinator, financial manager, social manager, webmaster, and materials coordinator.

Please take a look at the application, and, if you’re interested, fill it out and email it to aoneal@stanford.edu by Friday, April 1st.

We look forward to hearing from you and reading your application. As a reminder, there are tutor training sessions on Monday, March 28th at 10pm, and Tuesday, March 29th at noon.

Regards,
Dan
